Every year thousands of runners and walkers descend upon Hamilton City Centre for one of NZ's oldest and most beloved annually contested events, Round the Bridges!
Established in 1945 by the Hamilton Harrier Club (now the Hamilton City Hawks), RTB started out as a road race designed to showcase some of NZ's top athletes, with past participants having included Barry Magee, Peter Snell and Dick Quax. Given its popularity, the event grew from strength to strength, eventually becoming the fantastic community event you see today!
Nowadays the event welcomes people of all shapes and sizes, from primary school students right through to running legends. With finisher's medals for every participant, on-course musical entertainment and thousands of fun-loving runners and walkers, RTB offers an awesome day out which the entire family can enjoy.
2km Kids Challenge
Designed for children aged 7 - 13 years, the 2km Kids Challenge offers a memorable event experience and is a fantastic vehicle for educating kids about the importance of health, exercise and wellbeing. The event is delivered in conjunction with Sport Waikato's Team Energize and attracts over 700 children every year. Merit prizes are awarded to the fastest three boys and girls from each age group.
6km / 12km Fun Run and Walk
Attracting participants of all ages and abilities, Round the Bridges offers two fun run and walk distance options - 6km and 12km. You can enter these events either as an individual or as a casual team, with every participant receiving a finisher's medal as they cross the finish line as well as eligibility for a range of awesome spot prizes. Merit prizes are awarded to first placed age group finishers in the 12km distance only.
6km Secondary School Challenge
The 6km Secondary School Challenge allows students to represent their school and compete for the coveted Secondary School Team Trophy. The finish times of the fastest four students from each school are combined to find the fastest overall school. Individual merit prizes are also awarded to the fastest three overall male and female finishers. Participants in this category also have the opportunity to win hundreds of dollars worth of sports gear vouchers courtesy of the University of Waikato.
Please note: There is no specific start wave for participants in the 6km Secondary School Challenge i.e. participants will run as part of the general 6km event and can select any start wave they wish. For students keen to represent their school on the day, please be sure to select the 6km Secondary School Challenge category during the online entry process (not the general 6km category).
12km 'Legends Race'
Formerly a distinct race category (now accessible to all entrants), runners compete to be recognised as Round the Bridges 'legends' by placing first in the 12km event. Two prestigious trophies are awarded to first-place finishers: The Allan Bloore & Donald Miller Trophy (male) and The Tinkler Shield (female). Merit prizes are also awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers.
12km Corporate Challenge
The Round the Bridges Corporate Challenge offers the chance for colleagues and their families to come together and enter a team that represents the workplace. The fastest four team member's finish times are combined and measured to find a winning team. This team takes home the Corporate Challenge Trophy (as well as bragging rights of being the fastest business at Round the Bridges!).
